I am Luka Matthias Gruber , 20 years old, self-taught artist from Graz, Austria.
Sunny , my recurring character, is the focus of my work. He appears in various scenes, with a guitar, a briefcase, a trumpet, or simply walking. Sunny is an observer, a mirror, and a mouthpiece for my thoughts.
I work with acrylic, spray paint, and oil on canvas. I collect words, music, and random moments from my everyday life, dissecting them, and reassembling them.
Sunny represents everything that art means to me: presence, movement, calm, doubt, and courage all at the same time.
Biography
Luka Matthias Gruber (born 2004) is a young Austrian artist from Graz. He discovered his passion for drawing early on, which later grew into painting.
His works “GOOD ARTISTS COPY, GREAT ARTISTS STEAL”, “STAY LOUD” and “LISTEN TO JAZZ” are not silent paintings but statements. Each piece works like a declaration, direct and unapologetic. Art can be loud, provocative and take what it wants.
He works with spray paint, acrylic and oil on canvas, using these materials like instruments to make speed, volume and attitude visible.
These paintings grow out of stolen impressions. Out of images that appear randomly in everyday life, from conversations, lines in songs, sentences in books, scenes on the street or moments that burn themselves into memory. Nothing is taken as it is. Everything gets cut apart, twisted and reshaped until something truly his own emerges.
This is how a visual language forms that is instantly felt. Words become symbols, figures turn into shapes and every canvas carries its own rhythm. No explanations. No restraint. Just sound and movement. Art that does not ask, it takes.
On October 31 2025 he was part of the exhibition “Aspiring Artists”. From October 11 to November 11 2025 he presented his works at Galerie Papst. From November 28 2025 to February 28 2026 he will show around 15 selected pieces at Raiffeisenbank Gratwein Hitzendorf, shaping the space with his art. A solo exhibition is already planned for March 2026, followed by another one at the municipal building of Seiersberg Pirka in April 2026.
Gruber is a member of the oldest Styrian art association, the Steiermärkischer Kunstverein Werkbund, and is featured in the 160 year anniversary book of this historic institution. He is also mentored by internationally acclaimed artist Herbert Wallner, who recognized Grubers talent early on. This connection not only provides crucial guidance for his artistic development but also opens new doors in the international art world, where future collaborations are already being considered.
His goal is to establish a distinct artistic signature through narrative images and make it visible across Europe.
His message: “Following my feelings and not listening to others has taken me far in life. You have to allow yourself to make mistakes, because your own are the ones you learn from the most.”
