Luka Matthias Gruber (born 2004 in Graz) is an Austrian painter working with oil, acrylic, charcoal, and oil pastel. Painting has been part of his life from early on, with a more serious and consistent focus since around 2023. He is largely self-taught and builds his work independently, driven by intuition, process, and constant experimentation.
He consciously chose an independent path to keep full control over his development. Rather than following a fixed academic direction, he prefers to let his work grow on its own terms. This approach allows him to stay flexible, open, and unrestricted in how his visual language evolves.
His work moves between nature and industrial forms. Mountains, landscapes, and everyday objects appear again and again. Sometimes they are combined, sometimes set against each other. Nature adapts, shifts, and takes space back, while industrial forms bring structure and control. This tension keeps returning in his work.
His paintings develop between idea and process. Some works start with notes, sketches, and rough concepts, collected in his working journal Archiv Gruber. Others begin without a fixed plan and grow directly on the canvas. He works mostly from imagination. Forms appear, overlap, disappear, and get pushed further. The painting builds step by step and often changes direction along the way.
Chance is part of the process. Unexpected marks, material reactions, and decisions in the moment shape the work. He adds, removes, and reworks layers until it feels right. Most of the time, the result is different from what he had in mind at the beginning, and that’s exactly the point.
Alongside painting, he also develops installation ideas. His work is about testing, adjusting, and pushing things forward, staying inside the process rather than aiming for a fixed result.
